A child´s very first books are picture books. "Reading" pictures is an important first step on the path to enjoying books and literature. Young children will enjoy "reading" a book that they have created to the important people in their lives at home and at school.

Supplies Needed

Construction paper folded and stapled to form a book. Scissors, glue sticks and magazines, grocery store ads etc. that contain pictures of food.

Learning Standards

Literacy Knowledge & Skills: Uses pictures to convey ideas.
Health Knowledge and Practice: Distinguishes food that is most healthy and less healthy.


Adjust quantities and add all items at once


Step 1

Collect magazines, grocery store circulars etc. that contain pictures of food.

Step 2

Ask children to cut out pictures of food they would like to try.

Step 3

Provide folded paper stapled together to form a book.

Step 4

Ask children to glue their pictures of food on to the pages to make a picture book that they can read to their families about foods they would like to try.
