Many great artists created murals on ceilings! Improve fine motor skills and grasp. Provide physical knowledge of position words.

Supplies Needed

Markers, paper and tape.


Physical Development (Fine Motor): Manipulates writing, drawing and art tools.
Mathematical Knowledge & Skills: Develops an understanding of positioning words.
Literacy & Prewriting Skills: Experiments with writing tools and materials.


Tape drawing paper to the undersides of tables to be used. (Remove any dust or debris that might fall on children.) Provide pillows or mats if the floor is hard.


Step 1

Provide markers and let each child select a few of their favorite colors to create their own "ceiling art".

Step 2

Invite children to crawl under the tables and draw on the paper that is taped over their heads.

Step 3

Remove drawings when completed or leave in place for "secret" classroom decorations.Teacher Tips

Teacher Tips

You may want to share ceiling murals done by famous artists with the children as part of your introduction to this activity. Ask the children to think about what it might be like to paint in this position for long periods of time.

Display the children's "ceiling art" pictures on the ceiling of the classroom, a loft or other area and reinforce the position words above and below.
