SCENTS OF THE SEASON
This seasonally designed accordion book is inspired by our relationships to the visual images and familiar smells of the seasons throughout the year. In this lesson students will use scented markers, crayons and colored pencils, inspiring creative illustrations and critical thinking. They will focus upon the many different "scents" we can relate to each season.
- Students will use skills to create their own accordion book.
- Students will use design elements and principles to lay out the format of the book and each individual "scene" for each season.
- Students will use personal insights and experiences to illustrate scented items from each season and illustrate them in an environment.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED
Have each student select a colored sheet of art paper for the back and front of their book cover. Have them build their accordion book following the manufacturer's instructions.
On newsprint or other light drawing paper, have the students create the layout for the interior of the book. (The book pictured shows the four main pages of the book; however, there is still the inside front cover panel and the inside back cover panel of white space that can be used for student writing.)
Have students explore, using memory and personal experiences, the scents they would relate to each season and possibly which ones might overlap from one season to the next. What are their memories with the scents? What do these mean to them? How many can they illustrate in one scene? It becomes a challenge to illustrate outdoor items with indoor items. See how creative they can be!
When all illustration is completed, use the Crayola Glitter Glue to highlight and bring shimmer to certain areas of each page. This works best if you use the glitter glue on a paper plate and use a cotton swab to apply it where necessary.
Having completed their interiors, have the students design their title and cover for the book, bringing all their thoughts together in one design.
